Lessons of the Roman Hoard

Seaton-Down_250.jpgRecently, in a Facebook thread, another poster asked why anyone would need to own a powerful weapon, such as the AR-15 which was recently used in yet another brutal, senseless shooting of innocent victims.  He claimed (and I have no reason to doubt his word) that he has never fired a gun himself, although I can attest personally that he is incorrect in claiming to be the only libertarian who can make such a claim.

Trouble Melts Like Lemon Drops

WIard_trump_250.jpg“Someday I’ll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That’s where you’ll find me.”

Vote like a Libertarian in 2018

ohio-ballot-access-250.jpgEven though your taxes are used to run statewide elections, as a member of the Libertarian Party of Ohio, you have again been unfairly denied ballot access.  At your local Primary Election location in May, Libertarian ballots will not be available!

Even though the Johnson/Weld campaign got 3.17% of the vote in 2016 and exceeded the state's requirement of 3%, the Libertarian Party has once again been excluded from ballot access by a dastardly partisan election law passed by a Republican legislature, signed by a Republican governor, and upheld by Republican state Supreme Court Justices.

Instead, we will hold our Primary Elections like Libertarians - privately!

No permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests

generations_250.jpgAmerica has no permanent friends or enemies, only interests.” -Henry Kissinger.

I grew up in an amazing family, rich in culture, activism, intellect, spirituality and achievement. I was born in October 1968, six months after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and four months after the assassination of Presidential Candidate Robert “Bobby” Kennedy.  The 1960s and early 1970s was a particularly turbulent political period in the United States, with the protests against the Vietnam War and the ongoing protest internally over the civil rights of American citizens.  As a child [as with most children], my social, economic, religious and political views were shaped, and thereby controlled, by those in my immediate surroundings, namely my family and close friends of the family.

Educating Americans

education_250.jpgPrimary and secondary education in this country is an embarrassment.  OK, OK, that's an exaggeration, to some degree.  We have many fine schools in this country, some private and some tax-supported.  But overall, we are being taken to the cleaners by almost every other developed country in the world, educationally speaking.  So what do we do about it?

He's Not My Cup of Tea, But....

DEA-250.jpg

Otter: He can't do that to our pledges!

Boon: Only we can do that to our pledges.

--Animal House, 1978

January 17: Nobody can be harder on Libertarians than other Libertarians. We disagree about policy, we disagree about strategy, and we disagree about who is – or is not! –  a real Libertarian! As a group, we have real issues with learning to work and play well with others.

The message IS the message

man_shouting_250.jpgOne thing I learned growing up is that communication is the art and the craft of conveying meaning from one person to another. My mother, God bless her, taught me that. This means that the craft just isn't happening until the message has been received and understood. The artistry and elegance with which it is framed is worthless and meaningless until that message is received and understood.

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Instant Runoff Voting, But Were Afraid to Ask

ohio-ballot-access-250.jpgEvery Libertarian who has been through an election or two as a party activist knows the frustration of having to deal with the “wasted vote syndrome.”

“Vote for Libertarian Edgar Everyman!” we tell a fellow voter.  “Gee, I'd really like to,” says the voter.  “Edgar's the man!  But I can't vote for him.  If I do, Wendy Wickedwitch might win, and we can't have that!  So I'm going to have to hold my nose and vote for Sidney Sociopath instead.  He's the (wait for it!) lesser of two evils!”

Credit Bureau or Credit Bubble?

good-bad-credit-250.jpg

Are the credit bureaus responsible?
Are they contributing to the housing and credit bubble?
Why is identity theft so rampant?
What can we do about it?

Say no to a permanent tax increase!

Franklin_County.pngFranklin County is considering making its temporary quarter-penny sales-tax hike permanent. Officials figure people have already been paying it, so they won’t notice the pinch. Besides, it’s for a good cause: government.

We appreciate that county officials’ hearts are in the right place — they see endless social-service needs and desirable community investments that an additional $60 million a year could support. But their fingers are in the wrong place: our pockets.
